Cambio de tiesto al principio de temporada

Repotting at season's start
Hay dos clases de cambios de maceta:
  • Cambio a una maceta más pequeña, al final de la temporada fría y
  • Varios cambios a una maceta mayor durante la temporada de crecimiento.

En esta página nos ocuparemos de la primera clase de cambio.

 

A lo largo del año anterior el substrato de la planta quizás alcanzó un valor demasiado alto de concentración de sales y quizás se apelmazó debido a los riegos, perdiendo porosidad. Igualmente, quizás las raíces llegaron a ocupar toda la maceta, especialmente alrededor de las paredes y fondo.

A la salida del frío y coincidiendo con la poda (siempre que se cortan raíces conviene descargar la parte superior de cualquier planta), conviene cambiar a una maceta menor. Para ello se saca la planta de la maceta, se sacude el substrato y se recortan las raíces que estorban. Alternativamente puede recortarse el cepellón a 1/2 - 1/3 de su volumen.

En el primer caso conviene rociar las raíces desnudas con una hormona líquida de enraizamiento para acelerar la formación de nuevas raíces.

Acto seguido y sin que las raíces se sequen se plantará en una maceta todo lo pequeña que se pueda (o en el suelo, si éste era su destino). El nuevo substrato se introducirá sin que queden bolsas de aire (con la ayuda de un palito) pero sin apretarlo. El substrato debe estar húmedo en el momento de usarlo.

Acto seguido se riega (todavía sin fertilizante) y se coloca en la sombra.

A los 15 días ya se puede añadir fertilizante rico en nitrógeno al agua de riego.

Al mes hay que sacar el cepellón y ver si hace falta transplantarla a una maceta ligeramente mayor.

Los cambios de maceta son una parte básica en el crecimiento rápido y vigoroso de la planta.

There are two kinds of pot changes:
  • Change to a smaller pot (repotting), at the end of the cold season and,
  • Several changes to a larger pot (potting-up), during the growth season.

On this page we will deal with the first kind of pot change.

 

During the previous year the plant's substrate perhaps acquired a high degree of salts concentration and, at the same time, perhaps it became more compact due to waterings, loosing its original porosity. The roots also perhaps occupied all the pot, especially around the walls and its bottom.

At the end of the cold season and coinciding with pruning (every time you cut some roots you should discharge the upper part of any plant), it is advisable to change the plant to a smaller pot. You remove the pot, shake the substrate off and trim some roots. Alternatively you may trim the root ball to a 1/2 - 1/3 of its previous volume.

On the first case it is advisable to spray the naked roots with a liquid rooting hormone to accelerate the growth of new roots.

Immediately afterwards, and without allowing the roots to dry, you may plant it on a smaller pot (or on the ground, if this was its destiny). The new substrate will be introduced without allowing air pockets (with the help of a small stick) but without compressing it. The substrate should be moist before using it.

Then you water the plant (without any fertilizer) and leave it on the shade.

After 15 days you may add to the water some soluble fertilizer with a high nitrogen ratio.

After one month you may want to see if the new roots appear on the root ball perimeter and change to a bigger pot.

The changes of pot are a basic part for obtaining a fast and vigorous growth of the plant.

El procedimiento es el mismo que si se fuera a plantar en una maceta menor. Observar como se recorta el cepellón.
The procedure is the same as if it were to be planted on a smaller pot. Note how the root ball is reduced.
11 ABR 98 Esta fuchsia en forma de arbolito (standard) fue criada durante la temporada pasada. Ahora ha sido podada hasta reducir su copa a una cuarta parte. Va a plantarse en el parterre contiguo.
This standard was grown during the past season. Now it has been pruned to reduce its branches to a fourth in size. It is going to be planted on the raised bed.

Con unos golpecitos en el borde, la maceta sale fácilmente Las raíces tenían poco espacio para su desarrollo. Necesitan un cambio.

El volumen ha quedado a la mitad del original. Ya se puede plantar en el suelo.

Si en lugar de plantarla en el suelo se hubiera plantado en otra maceta, el volumen se hubiera dejado algo más pequeño, en una tercera parte, para poder seguir aumentando los tamaños de maceta durante la temporada.

If it had to be planted on a pot instead of the ground, the volume would have been left to an even smaller size, one third the original one, to enable the gradual increases on pot sizes during the season.
