Las fotos de
la izquierda muestran la animada concurrencia de visitantes al concurso anual
realizado, entre sus miembros, por una Fuchsia Society en Gran Bretaña (UK).
La reunión se celebró en un invernadero cedido gratuitamente por un Garden Center local. La afición por las fuchsias está muy difundida en varios países del norte de Europa, Estados Unidos y Australia en donde los aficionados se agrupan en asociaciones locales que, con una gran autonomía, están a su vez vinculadas con la Asociación Nacional del país. En cambio no tengo noticias de que existan estas asociaciones en los países de América del Sur, de donde proviene la mayoría de las especies de Fuchsia. Tampoco en España, donde el número de aficionados es muy limitado. Decididamente, las fuchsias hablan principalmente inglés aunque su idioma materno sea el castellano. |

Las
asociaciones con mayor actividad son las inglesas porque quizá allí es donde
hay mayor densidad de aficionados.
Una asociación típica puede tener entre 50 o 100 afiliados que se reúnen por lo menos una vez al mes para atender a una charla a cargo de un conferenciante llamado exprofeso para la ocasión. Además, intercambian sus experiencias y conversan sobre sus intereses comunes. También organizan un concurso anual, generalmente en agosto, presentando sus ejemplares más bonitos. Los jueces del concurso son personas con reputación de expertos que se desplazan desde otras áreas. En la definición estatutaria de cualquier Fuchsia Society figura en primer lugar el objetivo de propagar y estimular la afición por las fuchsias. Por consiguiente, cualquier nuevo miembro que no posea todavía experiencia en este cultivo recibe el apoyo y consejos de los demás miembros. Cada uno aporta su experiencia en beneficio de los demás.

Al margen de
la promoción de las fuchsias, los miembros encuentran también un motivo para
relacionarse socialmente con otras personas de su entorno. Reina un ambiente
acogedor y distendido, propicio para pasar un buen rato cada vez que hay una
reunión.
En mi caso concreto, a pesar de haber estado cultivando fuchsias desde muy antes de 1980 debido a su largo período de floración y de haber producido mi primer "standard" (arbolito) en 1983 -después de haber visto uno en la "Chelsea Flower Exibition" (Londres) del año anterior- no se me abrió un nuevo mundo de miles de híbridos, diferentes técnicas y personas compartiendo los mismos intereses hasta 1995, cuando me conecté a Internet por primera vez. Merecen un elogio especial los múltiples webmasters de las Fuchsa Societies que, sin ningún interés económico, publican en Internet sus conocimientos y experiencias en beneficio de los aficionados remotos que, como yo, hemos podido potenciar nuestras habilidades al compararlas con las de otras personas, a menudo en países con climas diferentes.

Quisiera
animar a cualquier persona mínimamente interesada en el cultivo de fuchsias a
que se inscribiera en la Fuchsia Society de su localidad y que todos los
miembros dieran el máximo soporte a su webmaster, aportando su colaboración
y experiencias.
En las Fuchsia Societies hay una inmensidad de conocimientos sobre estas plantas que nunca se han escrito en ningún libro. Hasta hace bien poco el único medio era el papel impreso, con sus limitaciones, especialmente el costo. Hoy es muy fácil para cualquier persona publicar sus experiencias, prácticamente sin costo. Fotografías, artículos, información sobre como obtener y cultivar nuevos híbridos, todo esto se puede publicar en Internet y ponerlo a disposición de cualquier otra persona en el planeta. The Fuchsia Societies The pictures on the left display the lively public attendance to the annual competition amongst its members of a Fuchsia Society in the UK. The event was held on a greenhouse granted, at no cost, by a local Garden Center. Affection for fuchsias is extended in several northern European countries, the U.S.A. and Australia, where the 'aficionados' group themselves in local Societies which, with a high degree of autonomy, are in turn linked with the National Society of the respective country. I have no news from the existence of such societies in the countries of South America, where the majority of Fuchsia species come from. Neither in Spain, where the number of people growing them is very limited. Decidedly, fuchsias speak mainly English, despite their mother language is Spanish. The most active societies seem to be in UK, perhaps because there is a higher density of interested people there. A typical Society may have between 50 and 100 members meeting at least once every month to attain the lecture given by a reputed speaker. Besides, members exchange their experiences and chat about their common interests. They also organize an annual competition, generally in August, presenting their best specimens. The judges of the competition are experienced people coming from other areas in the country. The statutory definition of any Fuchsia Society contains in first place the diffusion of the interest for fuchsias. Consequently, any new member not having yet the required experience receives the support and advice from other members. Every one contributes with his experience for the benefit of the other members. Besides promotion of fuchsias, members also find an opportunity for social relation with other people of their area. There is a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, ready for having a good time at every meeting. In my particular case, though I had been growing fuchsias well before 1980 because of their long flowering period and having produced my first and beautiful standard in 1983 -after seeing one at the "Chelsea Flower Exhibition" on the previous year- the new world of thousands of hybrids, different techniques and people sharing the same interest did not open before my eyes until 1995, when I was connected to the Internet for the first time. A special word of praise to the many Fuchsia Society webmasters that, without any economical interest, are publishing on the Internet their knowledge and experience for the benefit of remote 'aficionados' like myself, having been able to improve my abilities after comparing them with those of other people, often in countries with very different climate. I would like to encourage any person with a minimum interest for fuchsias to join their local Fuchsia Society and that all the members should give their support to their webmaster, with their cooperation and experiences. There is a host of knowledge "floating in the air" in Fuchsia Societies that has never been written on any book. Up to very recently, the only means was printed paper, with its limitations, specially cost. Today it has become very easy to publish the experiences for almost nothing. Photographs, articles, information on how to obtain and grow new hybrids, all this can be published on the Internet making it available to any other person on the planet.
